Tanzania’s government will review a proposed clause that would require mobile operators to list shares on the local exchange after three years of operation.
According to local newspaper The Citizen, the proposal has raised strong criticism from local operators – including the likes of Vodacom, Zain and Millicom – which have petitioned the telecom regulator to scrap it.
The clause in question is included in the Electronic and Postal Communication Act 2009, which is due to be tabled before parliament later this month.
However, communication minister Peter Msolla said the government would not review all contentious clauses, as some aim to safeguard public and national interest.
