Russia’s Rostelecom and Tele2 Russia are reportedly in talks about combining their mobile assets.
A potential agreement could see Rostelecom, which plans to develop its mobile network, exchange its recently-acquired mobile unit Sky Link and a cash payment for a stake in Tele2 Russia, part of Sweden’s Tele2 group, Russian newspaper Kommersant reported citing unnamed sources.
The parties are also considering combining their mobile assets in a new entity, in which they would each hold a 50% stake, the report stated. The entity’s assets would include the 4G licence Rostelecom acquired in Russia’s recent spectrum auction.
Tele2 Russia declined to comment on the matter and Rostelecom was not immediately available for comment.
State-owned Rostelecom, currently in the second phase of a major reorganisation as it merges with state holding company Svyazinvest, is Russia’s fifth largest mobile operator.
Tele2 Russia, which missed out on spectrum at the recent LTE auction, is the fourth-largest operator.
