Vodacom, the South African operator majority-owned by British group Vodafone, has appointed Shameel Joosub as its new CEO.
Joosub will assume his role at the beginning of September, with departing CEO Pieter Uys to stay on until March 2013 to ensure a smooth transition.
Uys has been the CEO of Vodacom since 2008.
Joosub joined Vodacom in 1994. He was MD at Vodacom South Africa and on the group’s board until 2010, when he left to become Vodafone Spain’s CEO.
“On behalf of the board, I would like to thank Pieter for his many achievements in establishing a great business which now serves the needs of 49 million customers across five countries. We are grateful for his vision, leadership and commitment over the past two decades,” said Vodacom chairman Peter Moyo.
“I am also delighted to welcome Shameel back to Vodacom. As one of the leading architects of Vodacom’s success from its earliest beginnings, Shameel will be ideally placed to build on Pieter’s substantial legacy.”
According to Bloomberg, Antonio Coimbra is set to take over as CEO of Vodafone Spain.
