The newly-established Mara Group has applied for a telecom licence in Uganda.
Founded by British-born Ashish Thakkar, 29, Mara was established as an umbrella company in January 2009 to bring together a range of his businesses. Scattered across Africa, Asia and with offices in London and Dubai, these span various sectors including IT, finances, real estate, infrastructure and now, telecoms.
“In partnership with global telecoms leaders, Mara will make its entry into the African market in 2010 with Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania as the initial focus before expanding in its drive to offer a pan African telecommunications service,” the group says on its website.
It says Mara “is gearing itself to become a niche operator in the African market by using a hip, young and vibrant brand”.
The UCC is currently reviewing Mara’s application to acquire a public voice and data licence.
Uganda already has eight operating telcos including MTN, Essar-backed Warid, Orange, Zain, Lap Green’s Uganda Telecom and the newly launched Smile Telecom, TMP-backed Dovetel and local venture, I-Tel.
