Bharti Airtel has created a new unit that will focus on foreign expansion.
Bharti founder and Chairman Sunil Mittal said: “The next phase of our journey is set to be another game changer – requiring superior thrust and focused leadership… We continue to win in the Indian telecom market, which is going through a phase of hyper-competition. At the same time, we will be developing comprehensive plans for our journey to cover emerging markets beyond India and South Asia.”
Bharti CEO Manoj Kohli will head the new business that intends to seek opportunities in emerging markets beyond South Asia. Deputy CEO Sanjay Kapoor will replace Kohli as CEO of Indian and South Asian business.
Yesterday, Bharti inked a deal to purchase 70% of Bangladeshi telco Warid for US$300m. However, Bharti has twice failed to merge with South African giant MTN.
