Austrian media speculated over the past days that Mexican tycoon Carlos Slim is showing interest in a stake in incumbent Telekom Austria (TA).
Austrian magazine Format reportedly said in an unsourced article that Slim is believed to have been in contact with Ronny Pecik, the investor who has accumulated around 20% in TA together with Egypt’s Naguib Sawiris.
Kronen Zeitung, the Austrian daily, had published speculation along those lines in the previous week already, local media pointed out.
Slim, whose telecoms group America Movil recently announced it would spend up to €3.2bn to boost its stake in Dutch telco KPN to 28% – is said to be looking to expand into Europe.
At Telekom Austria’s AGM, taking place next week, Pecik and Sawiris are seeking to get elected to the TA board.
Norway’s Telenor had previously been mentioned as a potential buyer of Pecik and Sawiris’ stake.
