US telco AT&T has been in discussions with US mobile operator Leap over recent months to assess possibilities for a merger, according to a report.
Leap hired bankers to advise on the discussions, Reuters wrote with reference to unnamed sources, without revealing the names of the banks involved.
It is not known whether talks are still taking place.
The news follows reports published yesterday claiming that AT&T rival T-Mobile USA is considering a merger with MetroPCS which, like Leap, specialises in low-cost prepaid services.
According to Leap’s most recent annual report, the company generated total revenues of US$3.07bn in 2011, and a market cap of US$424.5m.
