KPN, the Dutch incumbent, has given up plans to acquire TV, broadband and telephony services provider Caiway (CAIW) due to objections by the national antitrust regulator, NMa.
The transaction was announced in May 2011, but in August, the NMa said it would launch an in-depth investigation into the proposed transaction.
At the time the NMa expressed concerns with regards to overlaps between KPN’s and CAIW’s operations in certain regions in the Netherlands, specifically in the Western parts of the country.
A solution to address these concerns could not be found during the investigation, according to statements by KPN and the NMa.
KPN said the new development does not affect its 2015 broadband market share target of more than 45%.
