The Indian government has agreed to give up control of spectrum in the 700MHz band and allocate it for the provision of 4G telecoms services, according to media reports.
Dow Jones Newswires cited the telecommunications minister, Kapil Sibal, saying that an auction for this spectrum could raise more for the government than the sale of 3G licences in 2010, which raised approximately US$22bn.
According to the Business Standard newspaper in India, Sibal said that the Indian Ministry of Information and Broadcasting had agreed to vacate the 700MHz band. The newspaper also reported that the government has been discussing the clearance of the 1,700-2,000MHz band by defence forces amongst others.
