The US Department of Justice is set to approve Google’s US$12.5bn acquisition of Motorola Mobility, possibly as early as next week, according to US media reports.
Citing sources familiar with the matter, media reports claimed that the DoJ was poised to clear the deal.
The Wall Street Journal wrote that antitrust authorities in both the US and Europe have concerns about Google’s commitment to license Motorola Mobility’s patents on fair terms to competitors.
The DoJ and Google declined to comment. Motorola Mobility were not immediately available for comment.
The European Commission will announce the outcome of phase I of its investigation into the deal by Monday at the latest.
TelecomFinance understands that the companies did not offer any remedies to the EC in this part of the investigation.
The EC has to decide by 13 February whether to approve the deal or to begin an in-depth phase II investigation.
If the transaction were to be approved in its original form, Google would acquire Motorola Mobility’s patent portfolio, which comprises 17,000 patents and 7,500 pending patents.
