Bahraini incumbent Batelco has acquired a third-generation (3G) licence in Jordan for JD50m (US$70m).
The company, formerly known as Bahrain Telecommunications, said in a statement it had acquired the licence via its 96%-owned Jordanian subsidiary, Umniah, set to launch 3G services before the end of the third quarter.
Batelco said Umniah, which currently has a 31% share of the domestic market with about 2.3m customers, acquired 2.1GHz of spectrum from the kingdom’s Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TMC).
Umniah’s major competitors Orange Jordan and Zain both bought 3G licences last year.
