RPR Privatstiftung – the private investment unit owned by Ronny Pecik – has upped its stake in Telekom Austria (TA) to 20.118% via shares and options.
The partly state-owned telecoms operator announced in a statement that RPR’s Marathon Zwei Beteiligungs fund holds 15.018% of TA’s shares directly and indirectly as well as 5.1% in call options exercisable until 18 June.
Pecik has been building his shareholding in the former telecoms monopoly over the past few months. Last November, TA announced Marathon Zwei held a 15.8% stake in the company via shares and options, having acquired options to buy 5.4% of the company’s rights a month earlier.
Pecik had been quoted earlier in October saying that he had teamed up with Egyptian telecoms investor Naguib Sawiris to buy a stake in TA. Two months later, Pecik announced he planned to up his stake to 25%.
Austrian state holding company OeIAG is the company’s largest shareholder with a stake of nearly 28.5%. In December, OeIAG head Markus Beyer rejected suggestions that the holding could decide to sell its stake, stressing that its investment should be seen as long-term and strategic.
However, he conceded that the final decision would rest with the government.
Beyer said at the time the government would have to issue a privatisation order for OeIAG to reduce its stake in TA, but added such an order should not be expected.
