Nokia’s board of directors will reportedly propose Risto Siilasmaa as its next chairman following its long-term leader’s departure in May.
Finland’s Helsingin Sanomat newspaper cited unnamed sources for the claim. The paper added that according to the sources the board’s nominating committee would like to appoint one of its Finnish members as its new chair. Chief executive Stephen Elop has highlighted the importance the company places on its Finnish heritage following speculation it plans to move its headquarters offshore.
A Nokia board member since 2008, Siilasmaa also chairs the board of Finnish telecom operator Elisa. The former engineer is also the founder and chairman of software security company F-Secure.
Nokia has declined to comment on the matter but told Dow Jones Newswires the nominating committee will convene later this month to decide on its proposal for the new board. Helsingin Sanomat reported that Nokia is likely to publish the proposal in conjunction with the company’s forth quarter financial results on 26 January.
Current chairman Jorma Ollila announced last year that he would step down in May 2012. A board member since 1995, Ollila has been the company’s chairman since 1999.
Other Finnish board members include Stora Enso chief executive Jouko Karvinen, Sampo chief executive Kari Stadigh and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) professor Bengt Holmstrom.
