China Telecom has partnered with UK-based mobile operator Everything Everywhere to launch its first MVNO outside of Asia.
Through local MVNE Transatel, the group plans to launch commercial services in early 2012 to target Chinese tourists and residents living in the UK.
“We are keen to launch the service in the UK as soon as possible as there is a real gap in the market for the provision of tailored mobile services and competitive tariffs aimed at the growing Chinese population in the UK,” said Yan Ou, managing director of China Telecom’s European division.
Speaking to TelecomFinance last summer, Yan Ou said he hoped the new division would be able to breakeven within 3-5 years. And, if successful, it could roll out similar MVNOs in France, Germany and Italy.
He also said he was optimistic about reaching the more than 300,000 Chinese residents living in the UK, leveraging on the MVNO’s ability to distribute Chinese content and language specific apps.
For Everything Everywhere, a JV shared by France Telecom and Deutsche Telekom, the agreement brings its total MVNO partnerships in the UK to 24.
