The Latvian telecommunications regulator has reportedly awarded 4G spectrum licences to four local operators for more than LVL2.2m (US$4m).
The Public Utilities Commission (PUC) granted licences in the 2600MHz band to Latvijas Mobilais Telefons (LMT), Tele2 Latvia, Bite Latvija and Baltcom, according to local news agency BB.LV.
The PUC has yet to disclose the official results of the day-and-a-half auction, began on 2 January, but the starting price for each spectrum block was set at LVL200,000 (US$372,000). According to BB.LV, LMT – the country’s largest mobile operator by subscriber numbers – paid LVL772,000 (US$1.4m) for its allocation, which it is expected to use to boost the Long Term Evolution (LTE) service it launched last May.
The winning bidders’ licences are effective from 1 January 2014 for 15 years.
While the auction included five spectrum blocks, BB.LV reported that a fifth bidder, SH-35, withdrew from the process.
