Dutch incumbent Royal KPN NV (KPN) has agreed to sell its French MVNO KPN France to Bouygues Telecom for an undisclosed sum.
The Hague-based operator announced in a company statement that the sale will be completed before the end of the year.
KPN France operates under the Simyo brand, serving about 180,000 French prepaid customers.
Competition in the French wireless industry is increasing, with a fourth mobile operator, Iliad SA, founded by billionaire Xavier Niel, set to commence service next year. Niel has said he plans to drive down prices in France, where France Telecom’s Orange, Vivendi’s SFR unit and Bouygues Telecom are currently the industry’s major players.
KPN stressed in its statement that it will remain active in the French mobile market via Ortel Mobile, which also operates in Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain and Switzerland.
It stated the sale is in line with KPN’s strategy for accelerating Ortel’s growth.
