The Lebanese government is reportedly investigating local mobile operators MTC Touch and Alfa to determine whether they have violated tax rules.
Justice Minister Shakib Qortbawi is investigating whether the companies were unlawfully exempt from paying taxes in contracts signed with former Telecoms Minister Marwan Hamade, reported local publication The Daily Star citing a source.
The report suggests Gibran Bassil, the Energy and Water Minister, persuaded the Cabinet to launch the investigation after it emerged that around US$50m was missing from accounts.
Lebanon’s government has reportedly previously asked MTC Touch and Alfa to pay taxes owed since 2008.
MTC Touch and Alfa were unable to comment before the press deadline.
