The Afghanistan Telecom Regulatory Authority (ATRA) said on its website it received three offers for a 3G licence that was auctioned earlier this year.
The three companies bidding for 10 MHz of spectrum, in the 2100 MHz band, are Sahar 3G, Toseye Eatemad Mobin, and Shezai Tel USA.
ATRA explained that a committee is now conducting a technical assessment of all the companies, which could take up to two weeks, before issuing the 3G licence to the winning bid.
Speaking at a press conference on 19 July, communications minister Amirzai Sangin reportedly said that existing Afghan GSM licensees, including Roshan, Etisalat, MTN and Afghan Wireless Telecommunications, would also be able to upgrade their licences by matching the winning offer.
Sangin was quoted adding that since the country’s first two licences were issued for GSM services, about eight years ago, mobile telephone subscribers have soared from zero to 17 million.
