Orascom Telecom Bangladesh (OTB), a subsidiary of Egypt-based Orascom Telecom (OTH), is expected to pay BDT19.8bn (US$263m) over three years in spectrum and licence renewal fees.
The company added that, under the guidelines sent by the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC), the licence will be valid for 15 years.
Ahmed Abou Doma, OTH CEO, commented: “We are very pleased with the fruitful outcome of the one year long negotiations with the Bangladeshi government regarding the 2G license renewal guidelines. We consider the outcome beneficial to all parties and a positive indication to continue investing in the telecommunication industry in Bangladesh which in turn will benefit the end user.”
This statement comes about four months after the government reportedly agreed to revise the draft for 2G licence renewal guidelines and to keep spectrum fees at a reasonable level.
At the time, mobile operators Grameenphone, OTB, Robi and Citycell had been quoted saying that the fee levels, which vary depending on the number of subscriber a company has, were too high.
