Bharti Airtel has been awarded a 2G and a 3G licence in Rwanda, according to media reports.
The company will reportedly invest US$100m over the next three years.
The Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Agency (RURA) revoked Rwandatel’s mobile licence in April for failing to fulfil licence obligations in terms of investments, coverage, rollout and quality of services.
MTN Rwanda and Tigo Rwanda are currently the only providers of mobile services in the country.
Bharti Airtel in already present in 16 African countries: Burkina Faso, Chad, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Republic of the Congo, Gabon, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Madagascar, Niger, Nigeria, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia.
