Four telcos have been approved to take part in Italy’s 4G auction on 31 August, the country’s Ministry of Economic Development has announced.
Local telcos 3 Italia, Telecom Italia, Vodafone Italia and Wind will be bidding for the right to use frequencies in the 800MHz, 1800MHz, 2000MHz and 2600 MHz frequency bands.
The government plans to raise a minimum of E3.1bn from the sale of its 4G frequencies, which will include some 300 MHz of spectrum freed up as part of the digital dividend.
It had been feared that broadcasters’ calls for higher compensation from the auction of their spectrum could delay the process.
Local TV channels are asking the government to double its offer of 10% of auction proceeds, in exchange for relinquishing the frequencies they hold.
Spectrum winners would likely seek significant discounts if broadcasters refused to allow immediate access to the frequencies.
