UK listed retailer Tesco is preparing the launch of an MVNO in Hungary, according to local media reports. The articles state that the Tesco MVNO would run on the Vodafone network.
A spokesperson for Tesco plc refused to comment citing company policy.
The reports point out that Tesco registered several websites in Hungary related to a launch, such as tesco-mobil.hu and tesco-mobile.hu. Both websites currently redirect to the grocery store’s Hungarian main website, tesco.hu.
Tesco already operates MVNOs in several countries, namely the UK, Ireland and Slovakia. In all those countries it has partnered with Telefonica’s O2, which does not operate in Hungary.
The Hungarian National Media and Infocommunications Authority, Nmhh, had announced in early August that it plans to auction a 900 MHz frequency before the end of the year. It said at the time that a new entrant in the market would also be able to acquire 1800 and 2100 MHz frequencies.
