Malaysian operator Digi (KLSE:DIGI) has named Morten Sørby as chairman, effective immediately.
Sørby succeeds Sigve Brekke, who this week began his new role as president and CEO of Digi’s parent company Telenor (OSL:TEL), taking over from Jon Fredrik Baksaas.
A 22-year Telenor veteran, Sørby was appointed as head of Telenor’s Asia operations in May, another post he took over from Brekke.
Commenting on the appointment, Brekke said: “I am confident that Morten will put his vast industry knowledge and operational experience to work as a chairman in guiding the company’s continued growth journey.
“He already knows Digi well after more than two years as a director on the company’s board.”
Digi is the third largest mobile operator in Malaysia. In its Q2 2015 results, it said it had 11.8 million subscribers.
Sørby has worked within the Telenor group since 1993. Before becoming Telenor’s head of Asia, he was CEO of the Norwegian group’s Indian subsidiary, Uninor. He stepped down from that role in November 2014 for personal reasons.
Sørby’s other past roles at Telenor include being executive vice president in charge of corporate strategy and regulatory affairs, and the executive vice president and head of Telenor’s mobile and fixed network operations across the Nordic region.
Telenor has more than 100 million subscribers across Asia. It has operations in Bangladesh, India, Malaysia, Myanmar, Pakistan and Thailand.
