QTel controlled Wataniya Telecom will be among the bidders for a 3G licence in Algeria, Wataniya’s CEO said according to wire reports. The news follows recent confirmation by the Algerian Communications ministry that a tender for 3G licenses will be held in early 2012.
Last week the Algerian Minister for Communications, Moussa Benhamadi, had announced that documents for the 3G tender are expected to be published in September. Benhamadi noted at the time that all current network operators in Algeria are ready for the role out of 3G.
Wataniya, which trades under the Nedjma brand in Algeria, is the second largest player in the country according to its 2010 annual report, competing with Algerie Telecom owned Mobilis and Orascom subsidiary Djezzy.
Wataniya Algeria had 8.2m subscribers at the end of 2010.
