Irish cableco UPC Ireland will explore the possibility of launching a local MVNO after Christmas, reports the Irish times citing CEO Dana Strong.
The group is reportedly looking to complement its existing triple-play offering of digital TV, broadband and fixed-line telephone with mobile, but does not plan to build its own network.
A spokesperson for UPC confirmed the report saying: “Entering the Irish mobile market through an MVNO is up for consideration but it’s really too early to go into any detail right now.”
UPC’s Irish MVNO would compete in the country with Vodafone, O2, Eircom, 3, Tesco and Postfone.
The news comes as Just Mobile, which was predominately backed by Powerscourt Capital Partners, ceases all its services today after failing to secure further funding to reach profitability.
Just Mobile had reportedly been seeking to raise approximately E2m from investors.
UPC is owned by US media giant Liberty Global, which on 2 August reported US$2.618bn in revenue for Q2 2011, compared with US$2.168bn for the corresponding period last year.
