Thai cellco Total Access Communications (DTAC) said in a press release that it would launch 3G services on 16 August.
Jon Eddy Abdullah, DTAC CEO, stated: “We strongly believe that the 3G HSPA service on 850 MHz will benefit not only the Thai consumers, but also the Thai telecom industry and the country as a whole. Since the 3G HSPA service is provided under a concession agreement, it will also benefit our partner, CAT Telecom.”
The networks operated by private cellcos are owned by state-owned companies CAT and TOT. DTAC, True, and DPC all have a concession with CAT, while AIS has a concession with TOT.
But about a month ago, CAT reportedly told DTAC that it should first get approval from the Office of the Attorney-General before rolling out its services in order to avoid potential legal action.
But DTAC was quoted saying that it could not wait any longer, as AIS and True have already started launching services.
The companies could not be reached for comment before the press deadline.
