Helios Towers Africa announced it has been granted a licence by the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority to operate an ‘open access’ network in Tanzania.
Last December, mobile operator Tigo Tanzania, a unit of Millicom International Cellular, agreed to sell 1,180 to Helios Towers Tanzania for at least US$80m in cash and a significant minority shareholding in the tower company.
Helios Towers Tanzania will lease wireless communications towers to Tigo and other Tanzanian operators.
This is not the first time Helios Towers signed such an agreement with Millicom as in January this year it agreed to buy 729 towers from Tigo DRC and in January 2010 it acquired 750 towers from Tigo Ghana.
