Brazil’s communications minister Paulo Bernardo has reportedly said that several major telcos – CTBC, Oi, Sercomtel and Telefonica – will be taking part in the country’s national broadband plan, the PNBL.
According to a report by Reuters, these four companies would begin offering a broadband internet product following PNBL conditions within 90 days.
The plan stipulates that the service must offer a data transmission speed of 1Mbps at a monthly cost of R$35 (US$22).
The president of Telefonica’s Brazilian operations said that he expects more companies to join the PNBL.
The PNBL is being co-ordinated by state-owned telco Telebras.
In a separate statement, Bernardo said that the agreement with the telecoms operators allows for an increase in both the speed and the scope of the country’s internet network.
It is planned to serve all municipal areas with internet of 5Mbps by 2014.
