The British Virgin group is planning to launch MVNOs in Latin America in the next 12-15 months through a partnership with the wireless services company Tribe Mobile.
The president of Tribe Mobile, Phil Wallace, said: “More than in any other region, wireless has replaced fixed line service for consumer use and the region is ripe for new options that can either attract new customers or focus on special consumer segments.
A Virgin spokesman told TelecomFinance that Virgin was looking at a number of major countries, including Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia and Mexico.
He said that Virgin and Tribe would be investing US$300m over the next five years in order to implement its operations in Latin America.
No agreements with network providers have yet been made.
Tribe Mobile specialises in MVNOs. The company established the Dubai-based Freindi group, which provides an MVNO service in the Middle East and North Africa.
This is its first partnership with Virgin.
