Australian incumbent Telstra has launched LTE after switching on base stations in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth, the company has announced.
The company said that 80% of its mobile customers have now migrated to its Next G® network, which will enable it to repurpose its 1800MHz spectrum previously used to for 2G.
“With more than a million mobile and wireless broadband customers joining Telstra in the past 12 months, and data usage on the Next G® network doubling every year, the increased network capacity LTE will provide is vital,” said Telstra’s Networks & Access Technologies executive director Mike Wright.
Telstra expects that the initial 4G network will be deployed by the end of this year, at which time its dual mode LTE/HSPA+ mobile broadband devices will operate across the 1800MHz and 850MHz spectrum bands.
Telstra is partnering with Ericsson to roll out the LTE network, with Sierra Wireless developing the dual mode mobile broadband devices.
