French cable operator Numericable will launch a mobile offer, having signed an agreement to use Bouygues Telecom’s network.
The new offer, which will be available on 16 May, comes ahead of the launch of Free Mobile, Iliad’s mobile subsidiary, which will start operating early next year.
Free Mobile won a fourth 3G licence in 2010. Yesterday, the European Commission rejected a complaint by the three existing mobile operators – Orange, SFR and Bouygues Telecoms – which argued that the award of the licence to Free for E240m constituted a state aid. The three operators paid their licences E619m each in the year 2000s.
In a release, the Commission said: “In the Commission’s view, the award was made by way of a transparent and open procedure in accordance with European Union regulations and resulted in a competitive outcome. The Commission has therefore rejected the complaints filed by the three mobile phone operators currently active in the French market.”
