Russian operator MTS has said that it could sell its unit in Belarus after talks on acquiring the local government’s stake failed, according to media reports.
Reuters reported today that an MTS spokeswoman had said that if the Belarus government put its stake up for sale at US$1bn, MTS did not rule out putting its own stake up for sale at a comparable price.
MTS Belarus is a JV between MTS (with a 49% stake) and the Belarus government, which holds a 51% stake.
In March, the Belarus president was reported by local media to say that if MTS did not put forward US$1bn to acquire the government’s stake, then the government would put that stake up for auction.
