Mobile operators Vodafone and Everything Everywhere have challenged telecom regulator Ofcom’s plans to cut mobile termination rates (MTR) by 80 per cent.
O2 said it will support the move by its two rivals, since it too disagrees with the decision.
The operators argue that Ofcom’s calculations, presented to the Competition Appeal Tribunal, were carried out using flawed cost methodology.
Meanwhile, 3 has launched an appeal on the basis MTR should be cut further since it pays more in wholesale charges than it receives.
The government is seeking ideas for new telecoms laws for an updated Communications Act in 2015. According to Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt, the feedback will help guarantee a regulatory framework is fit for the digital age.
“Our ambition is to establish UK communications and media markets as amongst the most dynamic and successful in the world, with the review process culminating in a new communications framework by 2015, to support the sector for the next 10 years and beyond,” said Hunt.
