Local company Celcom has been awarded a telecoms licence by the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA), according to media reports.
The licence allows the operator to provide fixed and wireless services.
Celcom reportedly outbid Zambezi Africa Telecom, C-Mobile Holdings and Smart Telecom.
Under the terms of the licence, Celcom must roll out services by October 2012.
Airtel Malawi (formerly Zain) and Telecom Networks Malawi are currently offering mobile services in the country.
GAIN, a third mobile operator, is in the process of losing its mobile licence after failing to meet rollout requirements. It was awarded its licence in 2008.
MTL and Access Communications are currently the two fixed-line operators in the country.
