Pakistan is looking to start issuing 3G licences in October this year, a senior official at the Ministry of Information Technology was quoted telling Reuters.
The government is reportedly looking to raise up to US$1bn from this spectrum auction. The number of licences to be issued will depend on the availability of 3G spectrum, the Reuters sources reportedly said.
Reports about an auction have been circulating for a while now.
About a year ago, the Telecommunication Authority (PTA) had said that Pakistan would auction 3G spectrum by October 2010 and that a 3G licence policy would be issued to help the technology’s launch.
According to the PTA, the country has more than 100 million subscribers. The main mobile providers include Mobilink, Ufone, Telenor and Warid Telecom.
