Dutch incumbent KPN has announced that it will shut down “MobielTV”, its DVB-H mobile TV service, from 1 June.
KPN first introduced its DVB-H (Digital Video Broadcasting – Handheld) in 2008, when it had three handsets that could use the technology.
But the company said that there are not enough handsets that are compatible with the technology, and so the number of users has decreased.
It currently has approximately 20,000 “MobielTV” users.
The company said that it still believes that mobiles and television are a powerful combination. It also said that it believes customers will eventually be able to watch on-demand live TV on their mobiles.
A KPN spokesman said that it did not have any other mobile TV projects running at this time.
