Jordanian mobile operator Zain Jordan has launched high-speed HSPA+ broadband services covering 97% of the country’s populated area, the company announced.
A spokesperson for the group said that the launch was not affected by incumbent Jordan Telecom’s lawsuit against the government, since it was a matter for those two parties alone.
Jordan Telecom accuses the government of violating its exclusive rights to provide 3G services in the country, for one year after its own network became operational, in March 2010. It says the government allowed Zain to market and sell antennas, and is demanding JD120m (E130m) as compensation.
Zain Jordan CEO, Dr Abdul Malek Al Jaber, told a press conference on Saturday: “Launching the new Zain broadband internet service through HSPA+ technology today is a stepping stone towards consolidating Zain’s position as an integrated operator with the largest network in the Jordan telecommunications market.”
The new services will target both the residential and business markets.
Zain’s Network Department Director Youssef Abu Mutawe said: “Zain had set aside JD120m (E120.7m) to invest prior to launching the HSPA+ technology. Today, the Zain network is able to offer high speed internet services which can reach up to 21Mbps during phase one, and up to 42Mbps in the near future.” He added that the launch included 1000 HSPA+ stations, covering the whole kingdom as well as the main highways, doubling coverage provided by rivals.
Zain has also launched 3G services in Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Sudan.
