Sama Telecommunications has won Oman’s third telecoms licence, reports Reuters citing a decree from the state’s government originally disseminated by government news agency ONA.
Under the terms of the 15-year licence, Sama must set up and run a “Class 1 service”, although no price has been named.
Samatel, which according to its website is an Omani-based MVNO, will compete against incumbent Omantel and QTel-owned Nawras. Launched in 2010 to serve business and residential customers, Samatel originally ran on Nawras’ network.
