The Indian Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has revived plans to merge the two state-owned telcos Banat Sanchar Nigam (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam (MTNL), according to reports.
The Indian newspaper Business Standard reported today that the proposal has been put forward by the communications minister Kapil Sibal.
The merger plan was reportedly rejected three years ago by the former minister A. Raja, who is currently under investigation as part of the country’s presumed 2G scam.
A draft strategic plan for the merger reportedly states that a merger should be allowed because the two companies have complimentary operations and can combine their strengths for synergies.
