Thai state-owned telco CAT Telecom has given approval to Thailand’s second largest mobile operator DTAC to offer commercial 3G wireless broadband services, according to media reports.
The Bangkok Post reported today that Digital Total Access Communication (DTAC) had been given the approval after seeking it for three years.
The president of CAT Telecom Jirayuth Roongsrithong reportedly said that CAT would submit the proposal to the board in mid-March.
The president also reportedly said that CAT has the right to approve or deny DTAC the right to deploy 3G commercial services on a high-speed packet access (HSPA) network.
This follows a decision in December by CAT to allow DTAC to upgrade its 850MHz spectrum to HSPA for 1,200 base stations to provide non-commercial 3G services.
The newspaper reports that the decision has been seen as an attempt to defuse criticism of CAT for its agreement with the country’s third largest cellco True Move (part of the Thai telecom conglomerate True Corp) to market 3G services True Move had acquired a majority stake in Hutchison CAT Wireless Multimedia (HCWM), a smaller mobile business.
