LIME, the Caribbean subsidiary of Cable & Wireless Communications (CWC), announced today that it has signed a deal to build a cable linking Cuba with the Dominican Republic and Jamaica.
The contract was signed with Telecomunicaciones Gran Caribe (TGC), a JV between Cuba’s Transbit SA and Telecom Venezuela.
In a statement, CWC said that LIME would be the strategic landing partner in Jamaica for TGC’s planned 240km undersea cable segment between Cuba and Jamaica.
Under the agreement, CWC will also carry voice and data traffic between Cuba and Europe.
The cable landed in Jamaica today. A spokesman told TelecomFinance that the cable is expected to become fully operational in the first half of 2011.
Cuba currently relies on satellite communications for all its international connectivity. CWC claims that this will be the first international cable connection to Cuba in several decades, and that the infrastructure would provide Cuba with data download speeds up to 3000 times faster than satellite.
