The board of Colombian mobile operator Comunicacion Cellular SA (Comcel) has approved the purchase of a 93.26% stake in Telmex Colombia.
In a statement, Comcel said that the transaction was completed on December 23.
Comcel is owned by Carlos Slim’s mobile group America Movil, which took a controlling stake in Slim’s Telmex Internacional in June 2010.
Comcel said in its statement that the purchase of the stake was part of a reorganisation of the corporate structure of America Movil in Colombia.
The move appears to be part of a strategy by Slim to consolidate his telecoms assets in Central and South America. America Movil is the largest provider of mobile phone services from Mexico to Argentina, and also operates in the US.
