Thai state-owned cellco TOT may ask local private operator Advanced Info Service (AIS) to pay Bt75bn (US$2.5bn) in damages for failing to pay the agreed price on a mobile phone concession, reported Dow Jones.
A member of the government panel, which is currently conducting the investigation on the concession, was quoted saying that findings would be soon submitted to information and communication technology minister Chuti Krairiksh.
Reports explain that changes to the concessions were made by the former Thai government to reduce costs for consumers. But in 2007, the Council of State reportedly ruled that those changes failed to comply with regulations, as they had not been approved by coordinating committees and the Cabinet.
Other private cellcos, including Total Access Communication and True Move, may also face penalties, because they made similar amendments to their concession with another state-owned company, CAT Telecom, the Dow Jones report added.
