Russian mobile operator MTS said it was informed by the ministry of communications of Turkmenistan that the licences of its local unit Barash Communications Technologies Inc (BCTI) would be suspended for a month starting from 21 December.
MTS has been operating in Turkmenistan, according to an agreement it signed in November 2005 with BCTI and the ministry of communications. The Russian company said it had reasons to believe the agreement would not be extended and claims to have approached the ministry on time to formalise the extension.
“MTS management is taking active steps to clarify the situation but no explanation, including in relation to the alleged breaches by MTS has been given by either the Government of Turkmenistan or its Ministry of Communications. The Company is currently considering all available options, including potential legal actions, and shall vigorously defend its legal rights and investment interests,” the company said in a release.
