The auction of Brazil’s Band H 3G spectrum kicked off today with Nextel winning six of the first eight lots.
Brazilian regulator Anatel released the results of the first eight lots at 1442GMT, with further results set to come out later in the day. There will be a total of 165 lots in the auction.
Nextel Serviços de Telecomunicações, part of the Nextel group, a subsidiary of the US holding company NII Holdings, won six of the first eight lots. For the six bids together, it paid more than Rs1.05bn (over US$600m).
CTBC won the fifth lot, bidding over Rs162m (over US$95m). Brasil Telecom, from the Oi group, won the other lot, paying over Rs1m (US$589,147).
These results are unlikely to surprise analysts after Anatel said that new providers of 3G to the Brazilian market would get first priority in the bidding.
According to reports, only Nextel fits in this category. The other operators are only able to bid if the new providers do not express an interest.
