Swedish incumbent TeliaSonera has announced plans to launch 3G in Kazakhstan from tomorrow through local subsidiary Kcell.
Initially, 3G will be available in the cities of Astana and Almaty with 90 base stations, and the group intends to significantly increase its coverage in the near future.
“The launch of 3G is another milestone for Kazakhstan in developing advanced telecommunication market”, said TeliaSonera CEO Lars Nyberg.
A spokeswoman for the group insisted it was too early to comment on future 3G expansion in the country because investment plans were still being finalised.
In other news, rumours that first surfaced in October suggest TeliaSonera is in talks with banks about a E1bn seven-year facility to refinance debt. This comes against the backdrop of borrowing costs for high-grade European companies plummeting by half this year compared with 2009, according to Bloomberg data.
TeliaSonera declined to comment.
