The fibre optic network of incumbent Portugal Telecom (PT) has achieved record speeds of 100 Gbps between Lisbon and Oporto.
The speed was reached during a technical trial by the systems provider, France’s Alcatel-Lucent. The trial was designed to showcase PT’s improved network infrastructure.
PT now has end-to-end optical/IP 100Gbps connectivity across an existing Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) link, which covers over 400km between Lisbon and Porto.
Alcatel-Lucent said in a statement that this would allow PT to increase bandwidth in order to deal with the growing demand for video and multimedia.
PT’s CTO, Alfredo Baptista, said: “In keeping with industry trends, we’re expecting that video will account for well over half of our consumer traffic. This kind of demand requires higher speed, higher capacity technology.”
The statement from Alcatel-Lucent also said that PT had recently set itself the aim of covering a further 600,000 homes with its fibre optic network, having already reached one million homes. This expansion would require an additional 300,000km of fibre.
TelecomFinance reported on November 4 that PT was planning to give an exceptional dividend of E1.65 a share to shareholders, subject to approval from its board and Annual Shareholders’ Meeting.
This came after PT had sold its stake in the Brazilian mobile operator Vivo for E7.5billion to Telefonica.
