Irish-owned regional operator Digicel has teamed up with Canada’s third largest bank, the Bank of Novia Scotia, to bring an m-banking service to Haiti.
The new service, called Tcho Tcho Mobile, will allow Haitians to operate basic banking transactions such as withdrawing and depositing cash and transferring money between accounts through their mobile phones.
It allows Haitians access to the banking system without having to have a traditional bank account.
The programme aims to reach 20,000 users, with NGO World Vision saying it will use Tcho Tcho Mobile to pay its 130 staff operating in Haiti.
The system has been authorised by Haiti’s Central Bank and telecommunications regulator.
