British cableco Virgin Media will not expand its high-speed broadband network into rural areas based on state funding alone, according to its CFO Eamonn O’Hare cited by Bloomberg.
The British government will reportedly provide £800m to help rollout superfast internet connections in rural areas. Virgin Media plans to use incumbent British incumbent BT’s poles and ducts to roll out high-speed broadband while using the country’s electricity grid to offer fibre-based services.
Early October, telecoms regulator Ofcom unveiled regulations requiring BT to offer fibre competitors wholesale access to its infrastructure, as well as offering virtual unbundling services. According to BT, cited by Bloomberg, the money may become available in 2012.
