Vodafone New Zealand and Telecom New Zealand have submitted a joint bid to build a broadband internet network in rural areas.
This joint bid is the companies’ response to the government’s Rural Broadband Initiative (RBI) “to provide fibre to 97% of rural schools and a minimum 5Mbps broadband service to 80% of rural households within six years. It also aims to provide priority users with access to fibre-based broadband services,” read a statement from the companies.
According to the bid submitted, Vodafone and Telecom NZ will invest in their own networks to expand their fibre and wireless infrastructures to those areas.
The bid process is run by the Ministry of Economic Development for the RBI and a decision is expected by Christmas.
